1937 Antietam Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-68 PQ. CAC Approved. Fantastic! The obverse features a blending of gold, green, and rose irridescence while the reverse is basically white. Put away the price guides. Throw out any earlier assumptions. This unbelievable gem could set a record price.

The Battle of Antietam (known as the Battle of Sharpsburg in the South), Sept. 17, 1862, is considered the bloodiest single day in the Civil War. To pay homage to the 75th anniversary of this battle, designer and sculptor William Marks Simpson depicted conjoined busts of the two generals who commanded the opposing forces in that battle, George B. McClellan (Union) and Robert E. Lee (Confederate). For the reverse, Simpson recreated the Burnside Bridge which was a strategic site in the battle. A total of 50,000 were authorized at $1.65 each, although only 18,000 were eventually sold, the remainder being melted. Pop 13; none finer at PCGS (PCGS # 9229) .

Lot 4239
1936-D Cincinnati Music Center Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-67. CAC Approved. Natural antique toning adheres to the borders on both sides. Superb! The Cincinnati was brought into existence purely for monetary purposes. It features Stephen Foster on the obverse and a female figure holding a lyre on the reverse meant to personify Music. According to Breen-Swiatek, the date 1886 was chosen on the basis of no historical event whatever, in order to obtain a suitable year for convincing Congress to authorize the coin, "to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Cincinnati, Ohio, as a center of music and to commemorate Cincinnati's contribution to the art of music in the United States for the past 50 years"! Miss Constance Ortmayer designed the piece and her monogram is placed behind Foster's head in the left obverse field. A total 5,000 P-D-S sets were struck; they sold out at $7.75 per set. Prices soon rose in the aftermarket to $75 per set before a reaction set in and the speculating bubble burst (1936-37). Pop 27; 1 finer in 68 (PCGS # 9284) .

1928 Hawaiian Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-64. A satiny virtually mark-free specimen with some natural mottled russet toning on both sides. Lustrous throughout; boldly struck and attractive.

Captain James Cook was a British explorer, navigator, and cartographer. The Hawaiian Commemorative was struck to observe Hawaii's first sighting by Europeans when Cook and his crew chanced upon the isles in 1778. Cook would return to Hawaii on a second voyage in 1779, where, through a misunderstanding between the local residents and some of the crew members, he was stabbed in the back. However, the esteem in which he was nevertheless held by the Hawaiian royalty resulted in his body being retained by their chiefs and elders (possibly, as some claim, for partial human consumption, though this part remains contentious) and the flesh cut and roasted from his bones. Some of Cook's remains were eventually returned to the British for a formal burial at sea following an appeal by the crew (PCGS # 9309) .
Estimated Value $3,500 - 4,000.

1928 Hawaiian Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64. Stunning mulit-color mottled toning on both sides. A pleasant surprise to see these wonderful shades of color, with the underlying surface approaching gem quality through full bloom off the dies. Since our observation is that this date is not always fully struck, then this sharp coin, with its abundant detail on Captain Cook and the figure of the Hawaiian chief has every suggestion of precision manufacture (PCGS # 9309) .

1928 Hawaiian Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-63. Frosty mint bloom and untoned, with the key features such as Cook's hairpiece and coat-front nicely detailed. Popular Key Commemorative coin, only 10,000 minted. Since these were released in the Territory of Hawaii, many were purchased by non-collectors who threw them into souvenir purses or boxes. Less than Mint State examples of the 1928 Hawaii limit the availability of choice MS63 coins like this attractive coin (PCGS # 9309) .

1935 Hudson Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-66. Lovely gold and light rainbow toning around the edges. The satin surfaces ripple with original luster. The coin is fresh, original, and aside from the toning at the periphery, very silvery. The only contact marks are so tiny as to be unnoticeable. And so to the next qualification, the strike. Here we see quite good detail with only minor weakness on Neptune's face in the otherwise sharp centers. Mintage: 10,000 pieces. Pop 184; 6 finer in 67 (PCGS # 9312) .

1921 Missouri Half Dollar, 2 x 4. PCGS graded MS-66. CAC Approved. Nice original toning on both sides. Aesthetically appealing, a handsome full Gem 66 bristling with sleek mint bloom and with lovely color. Regarding this date, the clearest details are found throughout the head, cap and shoulder areas and also encompassing the key centers on the reverse which are generally quite bold.

Robert Aitken sculpted the Missouri Half Dollar. The obverse features a frontiersman some have claimed represents Daniel Boone, but it is not. The dates 1821-1921 refer to the centennial of Missouri's admission into the Union as the 24th state. A portion of the issue has a small "2x4" in the field in front of the bust. There are also 24 stars on the reverse, with obvious connotations. Walter Breen, in his encyclopedia on the series, described the reverse motif as follows: "A white frontiersman with rifle and powderhorn (apparently on the old theory that 'the only good Injun is a dead Injun') appears to be sending away the Indian, whose shield and peace pipe are mere impedimenta." Mr. Breen had a way with words. Net mintage was: with 2x4, 5,000; plain, 15,400. Pop 26; None finer. (PCGS # 9331) .

1936 Norfolk Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-68. Rainbow toning hugs the borders, more-so the obverse. A fabulous grade and deservedly so!

Obverse with the Norfolk, Virginia city seal; the reverse depicts an ornate Royal Mace, presented to the Borough of Norfolk in 1753 by Lieutenant Governor Robert Dinwiddie. William Marks Simpson and his wife Marjorie Emory Simpson made the designs. Although Congress authorized 25,000 to be struck at Philadelphia, only 16,923 were ever sold (at $1.50 each). The surplus was returned to the mint for melting. Pop 141; none finer (PCGS # 9337) .
